Back from a six week medical leave, I wanted to take a break from sharing technique and tips to talk about a great example of Green Design in a sustainable business.
SweetGreen is a great new restaurant in the Washington, DC area. With locations in Dupont Circle, Georgetown and Bethesda, this small business is seeking to share part of the fresh salad/tangy yogurt empire that is sweeping through Washington. In addition to its store locations, SweetGreen also employs the use of a 2.0 ice cream truck: Sweetflow Mobile.
So where does the Green Design fall into place?
- The Sweetflow Truck is and environmentally-conscious truck, retrofitted to run without a generator, which reduces the amount of fuel consumed.
- Tweet Masters - saving energy AND saving money! SweetGreen has harnessed the power of Twitter, creating one of the more brilliant social media campaigns. Sweetflow director tweets his route, so followers can find him at various locations throughout the week.
- Brilliant packaging - but only for carry-out! - SweetGreen stresses the value of conservation, while rewarding those who reuse. Those who “eat-in” use wooden bowls, which are cleaned and reused. Those who carry-out are given brilliant green bowls, and encouraged to bring back. Teaching their clients to reuse has its rewards - lower costs in materials for them, and free toppings for the customers!
- Composting is King - SweetGreen employs a clear and easy way to dispose of trash - and encourages minimization of non-compostable trash. Food scraps go into a compost bin, along with corn-plastic utensils, which break down with the other organic elements. Paper products, like menus, are infused with flower seeds, which sprout when planted. Nearly all of their packaging is biodegradable and made from recycled materials.
- Check out the sweet hand dryers in the bathroom! Dyson Rocks!
- Recycled from the inside-out! The beautiful wood interiors were constructed by using antique reclaimed hickory. Paper yogurt cups are made from recycled materials.
- Wind Power! SweetGreen uses 100% wind energy from Clean Currents.
But SweetGreen isn’t just a green business. Washingtonian just named their yogurt “Best in DC”, while I personally think the salads are better than the competition (you know who you are) - cheaper and tastier. As a consumer, I was really excited to see the green part of the business - it wasn’t the only selling point, but it was a big one! Its obvious these guys dig what they do, and really care about spreading the message. They’ve executed it beautifully, and I am excited to see what comes next!

Going green has always been the corporate social responsibility of firms to ensure that the planet is a clean and healthy place to live. However, in today’s economy, this responsibility has just become even more important!
Recently, I came across an article discussing how a move to more green could reduce the unemployment level by 1%. According to two recently published reports, a move towards more environmentally friendly practices and buildings would create 1.7 million new jobs, and help the US move out of recession. So, if the fact that going green leads to a cleaner, healthier planet, isn’t enough for you, here’s another reason that you should consider making the switch.

I’ve heard of a couple eco-friendly clothing lines and “green” cleaning supplies, but I never really understood how it would be possible to truly make a commitment to buying only (or mostly) environmentally-safe products. It seems like the amount of research it would take would almost make it not worth it, if not impractical. However, The New York Times reported on Monday about a new Web site that makes green shopping easy and even interesting. GoodGuide, created by a UC Berkeley professor, allows consumers to quickly find the healthiest, safest, and “greenest” products available right from their computers or iPhones.
To test it out, I browsed through the Food, Personal Care, Household Chemicals, and Toys categories, and decided to take a look at the cereal. The site automatically listed the top cereals, ranked according to their scores on a scale of 1 to 10 in three performance categories: health, environmental, and social. Each category can then be broken down further to show exactly where the product gained or lost points. One of the cereals that received the highest score of 8.5 was Cheerios, favored for its good nutrition score and because its maker, General Mills, has avoided community-related controversies and used their resources efficiently.
Once I started looking up products, it was hard to stop just because it was so interesting and often surprising to see how different products scored. And even cooler is the fact that the next iPhone will be able to scan barcodes right from the GoodGuide app, so shoppers will be able to instantly see a product’s score and decide whether or not to buy it.

I am up in Philadelphia today, where earlier I spoke on a panel at the Solar Energy Industry Association’s PV America conference. The panel I spoke on featured leading solar industry marketing professionals from a variety of companies and we all talked about the changing methods by which solar companies need to operate to attract new customers. The panel was moderated by Tony Clifford, CEO of Standard Solar, and featured myself, Mark Clejan of GreenLogic Energy, Jared Haines of Mercury Solar Systems, Gaelen Brown of groSolar and Jude Webster of Solardelphia.
I spoke on one of 360jmg’s specialties, digital media. From Web sites to social networking to videos and blogs, the way solar companies are reaching out to potential customers has changed dramatically in the last few years. Solar companies are now realizing how they can leverage new media tools to broaden their reach and extend their brand online.
Right now solar is a hot topic with all of the new government incentives that will be available in the near future. Everyone is interested in saving the environment and saving on their monthly energy bills. This makes for an ideal market to reach out to those who may not have considered a solar energy system in the past. Now solar companies are using those new media resources to reach this untapped market.

One of the many technological developments of the green movement that seem to be catching on is light emitting diodes, or LEDs. These new lights promise to last at least thirty times as long as ordinary fluorescent bulbs, while doubling as eco-friendly investments by reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. At first glance, LEDs may seem like just another trendy high-tech green invention, but turns out a complete switch to LEDs is actually a realistic possibility. The switch is happening more quickly than even experts predicted, largely thanks to Obama’s stimulus package, which provides money for green infrastructure investment. Cities across the nation are using some of the money to install LED streetlights, which will later provide significant savings in maintenance and electricity. Although the technology is still being developed, experts say that it is on a very fast learning curve, meaning that widespread use could be reached in just five years. So the question for homeowners is: is it worth paying an extra $90 or so per bulb if that means never having to replace them, saving on electricity, and helping the environment?

Odwalla, a juice company that prides themselves on environmental practices from waste reduction to green energy use, just launched a site for this year’s Odwalla Plant a Tree program. Ready for that summer vacation but don’t want your iPhone to run out of juice by the pool? You may want to think about investing in the Powerbrella, an umbrella with solar panels on the top and outlets on the bottom to keep your devices charged. While Treehugger claims that this is a practical use of solar panels, the Powerbrella seems like one of the more extravagant applications of solar panels out there. Nevertheless, it’s a great concept and one that I’m sure sounds to many people like the too-good-to-be-true combination of a summer escape and staying connected through the power of the sun.

The cap-and-trade debate is heating up on Capitol Hill as the Waxman-Markey Bill moves its way through committee and potentially to vote on the floor. Though many amendments are anticipated - any one of which could prove the poison pill - it is currently the only prominent piece of legislation that looks to aggressively reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and set a ceiling on the amount of pollution that the United States pumps into the atmosphere each year.
As a quick primer and a way to catch up on some viewpoints you may have missed, here is a link to a collection of some of the top articles from the opinion pages of major dailies on the issue. Most seem on board with the overall idea of reducing these emissions, but many are also hesitant about the implications of levying higher costs against energy - and the result is a number of varying viewpoints and solutions to one of the most pressing issues facing our country today: how to balance on environmental concerns, our impending energy crisis and our less than fortuitous economic situation.
There are many different topics being debated such as the multiple amendments that could be attached, the problem that American’s could really be paying twice for necessary energy improvements in cap-and-trade, and the fact that much of the burden is on the shoulders of the lower and middle classes to pay for these energy improvements.

So at this point, we should all be getting a little more familiar with what “green” means. The short answer - saving resources - applies mostly to print, but we haven’t really discussed how green design applies to the web. Enter open source software, specifically Drupal and Wordpress. This week’s lesson is simple: By using less electricity, energy and time, your web presence will be greener. Using Wordpress and Drupal will save countless hours of time and electricity - and will create greener practice.
With the arrival of all things Web 2.0, it has never been easier to publish content and craft messaging online. Businesses are thriving with the use of social media, like Twitter, Digg, and Facebook - which not only make marketing easy and mobile, but saves time and energy. Now, contacts can be saved and accessed on PDA devices or phones - giving freedom from the traditional desk and office setting. The same can be said of open source programs like Facebook and Drupal - giving users freedom and time not previously allowed in traditional publishing software.
Hundreds of Thousands of Heads are Better than One: The power of open source programs are undeniable. Not only are programs like Wordpress and Drupal constantly being hacked, rebuilt, customized and blogged about by their enormous communities- but they are some of the simplest programs to access and master. The number of web resources for modules, plugins and tutorials is staggering. A few good resources are:

So this week’s message is simple: Instead of wasting time, money and resources designing content management systems from scratch, take a moment to learn and open source program. This is a highly efficient way of creating robust websites, leaving more time for design and marketing.
